Today was one those days for me and so I got in the car and drove off to the Silverstar Casino. I didn’t go to gamble, but I did hit the jackpot – the Soulstice Day Spa.
The spa is beautiful. It is part of the Spas of Distinction Group, so walking in you know you’re going to get the best treatment possible. The ground floor overlooks the enchanting fountains of the lake and boasts an indoor and outdoor pool (with cocktail bar!) and a private garden with Jacuzzi.
It is the perfect setting for a girls’ day out. Just imagine book club with a glass of wine in one hand, great company and the world’s best pedicure. Why on earth not?
After discarding all the flotsam and jetsam of my life I donned my robe and slippers and headed up the stairs to meet Thembi. Now this sounds like a small and insignificant detail, but I appreciated it. In the pre-treatment lounge is a selection of magazines for both men and women. Quite often you spend your time waiting with little to do but stare out into the middle distance.
I didn’t wait long enough to read past the contents before Thembi arrived smiling with a selection of jewel coloured nail varnishes. We spent a happy few minutes painting my fingernails all the colours of the rainbow before deciding on the right shade for my toes. Hey, don’t scoff! These things take time. I’m a girl.
While I reclined like a Roman Empress and enjoyed a face mask and a nap, my feet were subjected to the most wonderful pedicure. Feet don’t get odes written to them or even cursory thanks in passing, therefore a pedicure will have to do. The highlight of today’s little pamper session was a Dermalogica facial. I’ve used Dermalogica skin care products on and off for about 15 years and they are worth the investment. One of the great things about a souls is the face mapping profile, so that afterwards you can tell exactly what product to use where. It allows you to relax and enjoy the experience without panicking about remembering everything afterwards.
I suffered a momentary pang of guilt that I should subject another human being to them, but once Thembi began I couldn’t help but enjoy it. They were exfoliated, massaged and anointed with mahogany nail varnish after which it seemed a shame to stick them back into heels. I felt I needed a new pair of shoes to complement them.
Armed with a list of essential Dermalogica products, I was faced with the daunting prospect of having to prioritise. Thembi’s advice was that the one essential item was moisturizer. However, as I am about to fly to London and hate that feeling when you arrive of just having risen from Tutankhamen’s tomb, I bought the Age Smart Skin Kit instead. It contains little bottles, essential for airline travel, and the single most important thing, the Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque. No traveller should be without it or a bottle of Antioxidant Hydramist. They are guaranteed to have you leaving the plane after a 10 hour flight looking like a Hollywood star post-Photoshop.
Of course I still have a list containing Dermalogica Ultra Calming Cleaner, Super Rich Repair Moisturizer, Overnight Repair Serum and Barrier Repair.
It was with great effort I tore myself away from the Soulstice Day Spa to go back to the real world. If I ever can manage it, I’m taking a half day on a Friday, spending the afternoon in the flotation tank, followed by a massage, checking it for the night at the Silverstar Hotel and then enjoying dinner and show. Of course I’ll have time Saturday morning to fit in a post-breakfast facial, manicure and pedicure before heading home. My ideal mini-break.
Husband – take note.
