Everything you need to know on facing winters scaly skin issues!

What happens to our skin in winter?

Winter SkinThese cold winter months can give your skin a lovely, rosy flush, but they can also take a toll on your skin. Cool temperatures, winds, and dry air remove the natural oils from the surface of the skin. This makes our skin dry, prone to irritation, redness and excess dead skin cells. The skin can become itchy and painful, and skin conditions may act up regardless if it be body or face.  Fortunately, there are many steps that you can take to prevent dryness and irritation, protecting the health and appearance of your skin, as well as your own comfort. These steps can start in your own home and continue in the luxury and heavenly spaces of your favourite spa.

Ideally, you want to add to your skincare routine as the season changes and swap your summer products for richer, more nourishing winter alternatives. Exfoliation and nourishment are of vital importance during this time.

As you stumble through the winter months we  have some great ideas on how you may make this time more beneficial for your skincare either with home remedies or with treating yourself to a luxurious spa day out for you and your love ones.

 Home remedies

Avocado & Honey Face mask

Ingredients

  • 1/2 avocado
  • 2 tablespoons honey

How to Apply

  1. Mash the avocado and add the honey to it.
  2. Apply the mixture on your face and neck.
  3. Let it dry for 10-15 minutes and then rinse with water.

Benefits

Avocado and honey are both humectants and help cure problems during winter. Avocado contains healthy fats, vitamins E and C, and carotenoids. They protect the skin from free radical damage and keep it hydrated. Apart from their moisturizing properties, the antioxidants in honey keep the skin looking young and fresh.

Coconut Oil Face Remedy

Ingredients:

  • Virgin coconut oil

How To Apply

  1. Lightly warm up the oil and apply on the face and neck.
  2. Massage for a few minutes in gentle circular motions.
  3. Leave the oil on overnight.

You can add some sugar to the oil and use it as a scrub to exfoliate your skin once or twice a week.

How Often You Should Do This

Use coconut oil every night before going to bed.

Why This Works

This remedy works best for dry and dull skin. Coconut oil locks the moisture in the skin and also nourishes it with essential fatty acids. Its phenolic compounds contribute to its antioxidant activity and give you glowing skin (3).

Olive Oil Body Remedy

Olive oil contains many antioxidants and healthy fatty acids that are good for your skin. It can soothe and condition dry skin all over your body.

  • Dab a thin layer of extra virgin olive oil under your regular moisturizer.
  • About a half an hour before taking a shower, rub some olive oil on your hands, legs and other areas with dry skin and massage lightly. Take a shower and then apply a light moisturizer.
  • Mix two tablespoons of olive oil, four tablespoons of fine brown sugar, and one tablespoon of honey. Rub this homemade scrub on your dry skin using light, circular motions for a few minutes. Take a shower and then apply a light moisturizer.
